Guard Dog Training Information. Any breed can be suitable for protection training and guard dog training. So a mixed breed could be better than some purebred Guard German Shepherd. Although this can be true, one will find a higher number that have the proper temperament for protection training from the breeds that have been selectively bred for this purpose.
The most notable are the German Shepherd, Rottweiler, Belgian, and MalinoisDutch Shepherd to guard with. There are other dogs a person may consider for guard dog training such as the Doberman Pinscher, Bouvier Des Flandres, Airedale Terrier, or Australian Cattle.
Out of these a German Shepherd is probably the best choice for the average person looking to select a guard dog training.
Breeds other than the German Shepherd to guard have their strong points, so they should not be over looked, however you need to be aware of your own needs, your strengths and weaknesses, and your handling experience, as well as the particular breeds good and bad points.
For some people, guard dog training may not be right are not only companions but are also used to protect their owners as well as property.
A guard dog is a dog employed to guard against, and watch for, unwanted or unexpected people or animals.
Both guard dog training and watch bark to alert their owners of an intruder’s presence. The barking is also an attempt at scaring away the intruder when they guard. A watch guard dog is typically a member of a breed that barks when strangers approach and they are not always best for guard dog training. They will alert their owners to danger and threaten the stranger but really don’t have the size or strength to follow through with their verbal threats.
Guard dogs and guard dog training, on the hand, are strong, large and imposing; their natural protective traits are honed to protect property or people. If provoked, some of these have the ability to cause serious damage by attacking. Most others will do what they can to protect and guard their family and possessions but do not typically attack.
Despite their natural protective instincts, they can be gentle and loving family members, if socialized and trained early in life.
Protection guard dogs can be a great benefit for those who are seriously interested in finding a way to make life safer.
Males tend to be larger than females and I think males also tend to be a little more confident and self assuredfor guard dog training.
It’s my opinion that females tend to bark a little more than males for guard dog training.
People often ask me , whether they should get a puppy or an adult guard dog, for protection or guard dog training? My answer is that getting a puppy is more of a gamble than getting an adult. However, testing a puppy and working with a reputable breeder, who knows what you are looking for, will increase the chances of getting a puppy that can develop into a good pet, with the mental characteristics necessary to do protection dog training.
The other issue is that it’s difficult to know if a puppy will develop structural problems, such as hip or elbow problems. It is wise to make sure that the puppy’s parents have been checked for possible genetic structural problems

Basically these different styles of conditioning can be broken down to what I call a hard methods or style of training and a soft methods or style. In general I would say to be most effective both styles of training should be used. There are exceptions to this rule.
With a hard style of conditioning, the guard dog is taught to bite using negative reinforcement.
When teaching with a soft style, the guard dog is taught to bite using positive reinforcement
Always remember, it’s the positive event (the reinforcing event) that is important in both positive and negative reinforcement.
Guard dog training is an example of what I call a hard style.
A soft style would be beginning schutzhund training.
You will have a better chance of getting a puppy that can do protection, if you get it from a breeder, that is breeding for those characteristics. The puppies genetic history, can be an important factor in selecting the right pup.
Many of the protection guard dog sports can be thought of as temperament tests for breeding stock. With this in mind, you may want to look for a pup with titled parents. Even though the parents are titled, does not mean the puppy will be a good protection guard dog when it grows up, or even that the parents deserve the titles they possess. However if the parents possess the proper make up for protection, it is more likely that the pup will too.
Now we come to the guard dogs that can be used for serious protection. These guard dogs have the courage, the drive and the training to stop aggressive humans. At this point we are in the realm of true attack dogs. This class of protection dogs ranges from leash on the low end to highly trained police or military on the upper end for guard dog training.
One of the big advantages of having a personal protection dog with you is that it makes you a much harder target to deal with.
A guard dog training is a guard dog either by training or by temperament or lack of sociability works a fenced area by alerting to the presence of any persons. Although not all guard dogs will chase or apprehend persons who are inside the fenced area. A guard dog has no sociability skills and is not a good family companion. Matching a guard dog to your personality and home/work situation is very important. If you have a high security problem you may want a guard dog that is very illing to fight for you immediately (this is called civil drive). If you have large areas you will want that searches areas and will search, alert and defend. If you have a low security problem you may want that will alert for you and be very sociable with family and friends.
It is very important to check our and know about the following: age and maturity of guard dog, when and where it titled, health, temperament, hip/elbow rating, vaccinations and what titles its parents achieved.
There are titles and certification for watchdogs, personal protection and patrol dogs. Although there is certification for personal protection dogs now, it is not available in all parts of the United States yet.
There are two basic certification for protection dogs which have originated from the systems devised in Germany and France. The German system and International system certifies the dog’s ability to track, do obedience and protection work, these are called the Schutzhund 1, 11 & 111 or the IPO 1, 11 and 111. Although the Schutzhund and IPO titles are useful to know what the knows and can perform, they are basically a temperament and breeding test. They should not be the end result for a protection guard dog or for guard dog training.
